This is our second year working with Enrique. We were so impressed by the quality of his coffees last year that we went to visit him to learn more about what he's working on and ask if he'd be willing to do a varietal separation this year. We are pleased to announce that we will be offering his Typica Mejorado and Sidra separately! As I've mentioned, Sidra is an Ethiopian Landrace varietal. Similarly, we sent the Typica Mejorado off to the World Coffee Reasearch center for genetic testing and, surprise surprise, Typica Mejorado isn't a Typica at all. It is a cross between the traditional Bourbon varietal and an Ethiopian Landrace varietal. But, as this varietal doesn't have a proper name, we will continue calling it what it is colloquially called in Ecuador: Typica Mejorado.

Finca Lugmapata is situated between 1,650 and 2,000 masl in Pallatanga, Chimborazo, Ecuador. In their first year of production, 2016, Eduardo achieved third place in the Taza Dorada, and the following year, 2017, they achieved first place. This current harvest, both the Typica Mejorado and the Sidra placed in the Top 10. Enrique is meticulous in his harvesting—only cherries above a Brix level of 22—as well as in his processing and fermentation.

The social component of Finca Lugmapata is really what makes it stand out. In order to help improve the lives of those living in and around Pallatanga, they prepared 120,000 new trees (80% Sidra and 20% Bourbon) in their nursery. Half of the trees were destined for soon-to-be coffee growers in the area to help teach them how to produce high quality coffees, create sustainable businesses, and improve their livelihoods.

Lugmapata is one of the most exciting projects we are fortunate enough to be a part of. As his farm progresses, we hope to be working closely with Enrique on fermentation and varietal experimentation.
